Bold City Brewery is Jacksonville’s first craft brewery. Since their opening, they have developed a huge fan base and an impressive distributorship spanning down to Southwest Florida.  Bold City has five beers that are available for year-round enjoyment including their Killer Whale Cream Ale, Duke’s Cold Nose Brown Ale, Mad Manatee IPA, 1901 Red Ale, and Archie’s Rhino Rye Pale Ale.

Bold City is one of the few Jacksonville breweries (if not the only) to have a cream ale, and it’s worth a visit to the taproom to try fresh from the tap. If you are lucky, you can catch it when it’s on the nitro tap. The Killer Whale, Dukes, and Mad Manatee are also available in cans and are easily found on the shelves of liquor stores and grocery stores.

Bold City has seasonal releases that are only available for certain times throughout the year including the super-delicious Super Secret Stout, Bold City’s Pumpkin Ale, and Big John’s Apricot Wheat to name a few. Bold City also barrel ages select beers. I just had a whiskey barrel aged Super Secret Stout yesterday and it was amazing. I do not like when the booze overpowers the beer, especially a stout, and this particular blend was a great combination. I got the boozey flavor without compromising the flavor that I love in a stout.

Moving from the beers to the taproom… The taproom is awesome. It’s small and intimate, with board games and a cool, casual atmosphere. The staff is friendly and if you meet Will, he will instantly make you feel like family.  The small indoor taproom can be a bit cramped when it’s busy, but there is plenty of space in the back brewery side of the taproom. The additional  space in the brewery has a large bar space, giant Jenga, cornhole, tables and also a permanent food truck, there is even room for a live band. Be warned, the brewery space is not air-conditioned but it does have plenty of fans and cold beer to keep you comfortable.

Something I really like about Bold City is their participation in local charities. Every time I look at their event calendar, they are hosting a fundraiser event and generously offering prizes, swag, and proceeds from sales to many outstanding causes. I was actually volunteering for a river cleanup yesterday held at Bold City in which we collected a disturbingly large amount of trash. Bold City also hosts running events, brewery yoga and can  be rented for private events.

If you are in the Jacksonville area, I highly recommend checking out Bold City. Though their beer is pretty accessible in the North Florida region, there is nothing like a pint of Duke’s Cold Nose Brown Ale fresh from the source.
